The School of Innovation & Technology has a distinctive specialist research culture, which is widely recognised internationally. The PhD is a research degree programme supervised by a Primary Supervisor and up to two additional co-supervisors.

We offer opportunities for full-time (three-years) and part-time (six-years) PhD research, which combine the submission of a written thesis with a portfolio or by textual thesis only. The PhD community at GSA rearticulates processes and practices in relation to an ever-expanding corpus of creative forms and fields. We are an intellectually vibrant and supportive research environment where creative practice is nurtured and valued. Collaboration, experimentation, impact, innovation and knowledge exchange are central to our intellectually ambitious vision.

Research at GSA

Research is pivotal to creative development at GSA. It is the sphere within which staff and students share and exchange ideas, knowledge and interests. The Glasgow School of Art is one of the UK’s largest concentrations of researchers in the visual creative disciplines. Our internationally recognised research culture generates new knowledge through creative practice, scholarship and criticism.
